> Successful development collaboration between ESA and SCHURTER AG
ESA_Cooperation

SCHURTER has maintained a development collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) for many years. Two fuses have already been qualified by the ESA for use in space.

On January 29, 2016, after an intensive evaluation and qualification process in cooperation with representatives of the European Space and Research and Technology Center (ESTEC) from Holland, SCHURTER received certification of the HCSF fuse. Eight years after the successful qualification of the MGA-S, SCHURTER is still the only Swiss company and thus also the only European supplier of fuses with this qualification [1].

The MGA-S [2] is a SMD (surface mounting device) fuse, which is manufactured with thin-film technology and is hermetically sealed with the ceramic housing and designed to be extremely robust. Similarly, the new HCSF fuse [3] was developed for applications with higher rated currents. The approaches to solutions of this development are summarized in the history of this successful cooperation [4]. Besides the description of the technical possibilities, the relevant collaboration documents with the ESA are also referenced therein.

Both fuses meet the exceptionally demanding requirements of the aerospace industry, e.g., consistent properties during operation in a high vacuum or an acceleration of 1,600 g’s. Further relevant details about the products are listed in the respective data sheets. Each article delivered goes through a specified burn-in test lasting 168 hr at 85°C and 96% of the rated current. As a result, the failure rate of the fuse during operation is practically reduced to zero. The products are provided with an extensive test report.

SCHURTER is proud is be listed as the supplier of qualified products on the ESA webpage [5]. The excellent quality of the SCHURTER products is based on focused, market-oriented development in close cooperation with our partners as well as use of state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and production facilities. The company is distinguished by its consistent quality management.

> CSO: Heavy duty fuse clip designed for voltages up to 1500 VAC / VDC and currents to 32 A
CSO

SCHURTER, a leading provider of fuseholders, expands its CSO heavy duty fuse clip family with a cost-effective tin-plated version. The CSO clip, designed for 10.3 mm diameter fuses, is suitable for applications with voltages up to 1500 VAC / VDC and currents to 32 A. These unique characteristics are SCHURTER’s response to the increasing photovoltaic system voltage requirements.

The CSO clip is available in solder and screw/rivet versions. The solder version allows direct mounting on a printed circuit board by means of through-hole technology. The screw/rivet version provides additional flexibility for basic designs. Due to the special copper alloy all versions are characterized by a strong clamping force resulting in minimal power loss.

The CSO fuse clip is ideal for a wide range of PV and other DC applications including inverters, battery charge controllers, and string fuse holders. Furthermore, the CSO is well suited for applications in the e-mobility and industrial electronics sectors. The fuse clip conforms to RoHS specifications and is currently the only photovoltaic clip on the market with cURus approval.

SCHURTER also offers the ASO 10.3×38 PV fuse to fit the new CSO fuse clip. The fuse clip also supports other fuses with a 10.3 mm diameter of any length. This includes, for instance, 10.3×85 mm fuses for higher voltages.

> KMF protection class II: Compact power entry module for protection class II equipment
KMF

SCHURTER expands its wide range of power entry modules to include versions, without ground pin, for use in protection class II double-insulated applications. The KMF power entry module is already very popular for use in protection class I equipment, due to its high functionality in a compact package. The new protection class II version is perfectly suited for medical equipment used at home where the medical standard prescribes the use of protection class II design.

The new KMF class II version is according to IEC 60320-1, style C18. It is particularly well suited for use in medical equipment according to the IEC standard 60601-1-11, which outlines additional safety measures specific to medical equipment intended for use in the home. There is increasing demand for such equipment as populations around the world age and healthcare costs continue to rise. Protection class II equipment, in contrast to protection class I equipment, generally has no metal case. This category of equipment is called double insulated, and requires higher safety levels for energized components relative to exposed surfaces. The KMF class II power entry module provides double insulation between energized components and exposed parts. This reinforced insulation is tested with a voltage of 4000 VDC between the energized conductor (L) and the neutral conductor (N) relative to the mounting panel.

The KMF line switch is available with a 2-pole line switch and a 1- or 2-pole fuse holder. For medical applications an “extra-safe” fuse holder is available that can only be opened with the aid of a tool. The EMC filter is available in medical and low leakage, M5, versions. This integrated filter at the power input provides highly effective interference suppression, which results in optimized electromagnetic compatibility. Current ratings range from 1-10 A at 250 VAC. Connections is taking place with quick-connect terminals 4.8 x 0.8 mm.

The KMF class I and class II are ENEC, cURus and CCC approved. They are suited for use in equipment according to IEC 60950, IEC 60601-1, in addition to IEC 60601-1-11.
